my thoughts.
I first read the Splintered series by A.G. Howard at the end of 2015 and fell in love with the Alice in Wonderland retelling/reimagining. The world was so weird and wonderful and fantastic that I had to keep reading until I’d finished the series. When I saw Untamed on the shelf a few months ago I had to pick it up, because as a fan of the series, of course I wanted to know what happened after it ended.
Untamed is a collection of three novellas following different characters from the Splintered universe. The first story is about Alison’s memories of Wonderland and how she met Alyssa’s father, Thomas. The second story shows Morpheus digging in to Jeb’s memories while he’s waiting for Alyssa and the last story is Alyssa reminiscing on her human life as she prepares to return to Wonderland and Morpheus.
Overall, these stories were a great supplement to the Splintered universe. The Boy in the Web was a great insight into the relationship of Alyssa’s parents, although the pace was quite slow and it took a while to get through it despite to only being 70 pages long. The Moth in the Mirror was pure Morpheus, who’s got his own motivations for trying to dig through Jeb’s memories. It’s always fun to get into his head because he’s such a complicated character.
Six Impossible Things was probably my favourite of the novellas as it’s a snapshot look at Alyssa’s human life and it was lovely to see small moments, such as her marriage, her children and her grief and the preparations in place for her return to Wonderland. It was very sweet and provides a lot of closure for the series.
Overall, I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars.
