To say I was anticipating the release of the third and final book in the Shades of Magic series, A Conjuring of Light, might be a bit of an understatement. This series is now up there with my favourite books and while I won’t go into too much detail (because spoilers!) I had to share a few things with you all, in case you’re still wondering whether or not to pick up these books.
In A Darker Shade of Magic, we were introduced to the characters, the world and the magic system. In A Conjuring of Light that world was expanded, and we began to see the pervasive consequences of magic across the different Londons. In A Conjuring of Light we learn even more about the characters we’ve come to know and love (and hate) as the fate of multiple worlds hangs in the balance.
This is a book full of action, suspense, magic and wonderfully well-rounded characters. A Conjuring of Light is significantly longer in length, and while there are moments where aspects of the story of written out in detail, I could not put this book down - I just wanted to know everything.
We start in the middle of the action - right where the previous book finished on it’s cliffhanger - and the only time the pace slows down is during brief flashbacks that, rather than detract from the main plot it helped to further flesh out characters and their motivations.
In this book we get new POV chapters, a whole lot of fight scenes (most of them on-the-edge-of-your-seat-stressful-and-bloody), pirate ships, magic, and quite a few heart-breaking moments.
Kell and Lila remain my absolute favourites of the series, but it was fascinating to expand on characters like Rhy and Alucard and a whole host of side characters. Possibly the most surprisingly character development came from Holland and yet his story arc overall had to be one of the most compelling in the series.
I’m so happy that this is a trilogy and the story itself was wrapped up, and not in a predictable way. I was so wonderfully satisfied with the conclusion. I confess to being a little lost now that the story is all done, but I couldn’t be happier with how it all ended.
Without question, 5 out of 5 stars.
