Book Review | Siege and Storm

synopsis.

Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land. She finds starting new is not easy while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret. She can’t outrun her past or her destiny for long.

The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with a terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very boundaries of the natural world. With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the country she abandoned, determined to fight the forces gathering against Ravka. But as her power grows, Alina slips deeper into the Darkling’s game of forbidden magic, and farther away from Mal. Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her--or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm.

my thoughts.

Seige and Storm is the second book in The Grisha Trilogy, and a wonderful continuation of the series.

Alina continues to be an intriguing character and her character development in this book is huge as she continues to learn about her new abilities and the implications that come along with them. Mal’s character development in this book was not as great and he was quite a frustrating character to read at times. The Darkling was fantastic, again, and Bardugo’s introduction of Sturmhond was wonderful. His character is so different from the others, and is refreshingly hilarious (and charming and intelligent).

“Anything worth doing always starts with a bad idea.” (Sturmhond)

The pacing in this book was a little off for me, with the bulk of the action taking place in the first one hundred pages or so, and the picking up again right at the end, but there was enough character exploration in the middle that it almost made up for it. The world definitely took a bit of steampunk-like turn, with the introduction of more conventional firearms weapons alongside Grisha abilities.

This book was a wonderful continuation of the trilogy and kept me entertained and wanting more all the way through to the end (and afterwards, too).

I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars.

  2. I remember I liked this book, but sadly never continued with series. I should reread first two books now in order to continue, as I forgot so many things...

    1. They're pretty quick reads, which I found a great way to marathon through the three books. (And it was nice to not have to wait for books to be released).
