synopsis.
A brilliantly simple, funny, interactive picture book that introduces children to the strange, unseen world of microbes all around them by the award-winning author of Small Wonders and the animator of the insanely successful video 'Dumb Ways to Die'.
Min is a microbe. She is small. Very small. In fact so small that you'd need to look through a microscope to see her. Or you can simply open this book and take Min on an adventure to amazing places she's never seen before - like the icy glaciers of your tooth or the twisted, tangled jungle that is your shirt.
The perfect book for anyone who wants to take a closer look at the world.
review.
Do Not Lick This Book is a fun exploration of the tiny world of microbes, perfect for readers young and old.
This fictional-non-fiction book (I love this category of picture books!) explores the world of microbes through Min - an E. coli microbe -as she ventures from her known space on a book to a variety of new locations where she meets other microbes with specific tasks. Told through words and pictures, including adorable cartoon illustrations on top of real microscope photographs, this book gives readers an insight into what microbes do and where you can find them.
Putting my teacher hat on, I know my younger students would be fascinated by the strange micro world. They love to know about the extremes - the biggest and the smallest, and this book definitely delivers on the smallest. It provides context (as best it can) for the size of Min and her friends, and explains the wacky photographs that look completely alien, but are, in reality, paper fibre, teeth, shirts and skin.
Overall, this was entertaining and informative and a great way to teach a scientific concept to younger readers.
4 out of 5 stars.
Thank you to Allen and Unwin for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
